Is there a difference? I’ve always maintained that routine in a marriage, particularly in the bedroom, is a killer. “The same old thing day after day,” is how I would describe routine, and we do our level best to avoid it. Yet at two o’clock every day, whatever else we are doing (almost), Emma is bound to say, “Coffee time!” This has become a ritual, the only variation being what delicacy I have made during the week to serve with our cappuccino. Even when we are on holiday, we invariably start looking for a coffee-house at about the same time, or have coffee brought to our room if there is room-service. It seems strange that, although we have consciously tried to avoid falling into a routine in every other way, we have developed this ritual of taking coffee at the same time every day, come what may. [And incidentally, having tried several other machines, our Baby Gaggia is the best investment we have made since our retirement.]
