Come live with me and be my love

Talking of doomed marriages - as I may have been yesterday - reminded me of another colleague, this time a teacher whom I had known since we were at college together. Although he was a P.E. teacher, Earwig seemed almost normal until Kathie B. joined the staff. She was admittedly attractive and vivacious - the sort of teacher boys have wet dreams about - but another female member of staff described her as “a bit rough round the edges”. That could have been the Geordie accent, I suppose, or simply jealousy. Kathie was staying with my deputy and her husband, which is how I came to hear that Earwig had turned up on the first day of the Summer holiday and begged Kathie to be his love. Nothing strange about that, you may think - except that Earwig was to be married the next day and promised to call the whole thing off in favour of canny lass Kathie. She turned him down, the wedding went ahead as planned, and they all lived happily ever after? Maybe.
