Pictures of Emm
Even a trained chimp can paint a picture of sorts, and many an art-dealer has been fooled into speaking highly of simian scribbles. Decades ago, my art teacher Scarland - nicknamed Scallywag - used to say that anyone could “draw a likeness” . (Mind you, I’ve also heard it said, by people who haven’t heard Emma sing, that anyone can carry a tune. But I digress.) Out of kindness to my model, I gave up trying to draw a likeness freehand as soon as I could afford a camera. But since the advent of digital photography I have spent many a happy hour manipulating images of Emma in an attempt to reawaken the inner artist in me. Scallywag would have been pleased at my ambition, if not my method, or the results of my efforts. By now I have an album full of the stuff since they are now the only images of Emma she will let me make hard-copies of. So from hereon in, if I don’t have anything worthwhile to say, I may publish an “art study” without comment.
