Today is St George's Day

As befit’s the nation that invented the football hooligan, England’s patron saint is portrayed as a merciless slayer of dragons, doing for that gentle species what Buffalo Bill did for the American bison - presumably before moving on to clubbing baby seals to death in Canada. Medieval cartographers used to inscribe the warning “Here be dragons” when including dangerous and unexplored landmasses on the maps. Since that time dragons have had a bad press, with one or two notable exceptions. A recently-released animation has gone some way to redress the balance, but still perpetuates the myth that dragons are ferocious beasts which need to be subdued by brute force or tamed by a dragon-whisperer. That is simply not true. Puff, the magic dragon, you will recall, was a danger only to himself, as he frolicked in the morning mist beside the sea. Obviously he and his kind posed no threat to passing virgins - although Emma can hardly be classed as a virgin.
