Braving the elements

The Great Orme is a major attraction of Llandudno - some would say it’s only attraction. The word means Sea Monster, and from a distance the promontory does look like a large brooding beast guarding the town. The Victorians who established Llandudno specifically as a watering-hole for the wealthy, built a state-of-the-art tramway to carry them to the summit of the Orme. The cars are hauled by cable in two stages, the engine-house being half-way up. It’s a magnificent piece of engineering, but can be a slow, uncomfortable ride. The carriage windows are without glass, and the winds on the Orme can be cold at the best of times. At the summit, there is a café, shop and a pub called the Randolph Turpin. Turpin, a world champion boxer, originally owned the complex, but had to sell it to the town council when the taxman caught up with him. As I said, Emma was supposed to get her tits out on the Great Orme. It’s a pity she declined. In the icy blast, her nipples would have stood out like organ-stops.
