It’s always a problem when two special days coincide. Today is Dydd Santes Dwynwen (St Dwynwen’s Day) - as popular in Wales as St Valentine’s Day is elsewhere. The patron saint of Welsh lovers, Dwynwen was the most beautiful of Brychen Brycheiniog’s twenty-four daughters. She was in love with Maelon Dafodrill, who raped her when her father promised her to another prince. She escaped to a lonely wood and prayed to be released from her love of Maelon. She dreamt that she was given a potion which cured her. But the same potion turned Maeleon into a block of ice. God granted the maiden three wishes - that Maelon be restored, that she herself should never wish to marry. And that the wishes of all true lovers made through her be granted. The remains of St Dwynwen’s church can be seen on the tiny island of Llanddwyn, of the coast of Anglesey. But today we are also celebrating the life and works of Robert (Rabbie) Burns - whose love, if you recall, was like a red, red rose.
