[Wednesday, 27th January, 1960] Last night was the first time I have seen Emma since my embarrassment last week. We couldn’t see each other over the weekend as Emma had a heavy cold - or so she said. In which case, she has made a remarkable recovery. It was, I was told in no uncertain terms, touch and go whether she ever wanted to see me again. Fortunately, her mother had more or less demanded that Emma kick me into touch. I say fortunately because there is no way Emma would give her mother the satisfaction of saying, “I told you so.” Even more fortunately, Emma’s father - always happy to disagree with his wife on major issues - had told Emma, “Don’t you dare split up with that young man.” He had seen her lace my small sherry with a double scotch. What a great guy! I’m glad now that I always slip in the occasion “Sir” when speaking to him.
