Today is Australia Day of course. I will leave it to others to describe precisely how the day is celebrated down under, but you can guarantee it will involve the beach, a barbeque, and a few cans of the amber nectar. Emma and I have a standing invitation to visit our former penal colony and to stay for as long as we like. My brother was transported there more than forty years ago and is settled in Sydney, now enjoying his recent retirement. We lost touch for thirty years, but finally made contact again thanks to the internet. Since then, he and his wife have visited us three or four times and we toured Ireland together last year. But our reluctance to set foot on a heavier-than-air machine - despite the kudos of joining the mile-high club - means that Emma and I are most unlikely to visit them in Australia. Crack a tube for me, Cobber, and enjoy the barbie.
