My career in teaching - 07

Mr Chips
Although I was a teacher for twenty years of my working life, I had a healthy disrespect for the profession. Too many teachers had never really left school. My friend DF, for example, had left the Rock as a sixth-former, spent three years at Chester College, before returning to the Rock as a PE teacher - no doubt to point others in the same direction. And talk about petty! In the days when corporal punishment was permitted, and smoking was allowed in the staff-room, many a teacher would stub out his cigarette and leave the room to cane pupils found smoking behind the gym. On one occasion, I walked into an upper-storey classroom overlooking the gym to find one teacher with a pair of binoculars calling out the names of smokers to a colleague. A few minutes later, they observed Alfie talking to the lads behind the gym to warn them they were being spied upon. You can imagine the friendly exchange of views which that led to in the smoke-filled atmosphere of the staff-room! [The picture is of Emma at the time.]
