This rock engraving from Libya dating from around 5000 BC is one of my favourite images from prehistory. I find it remarkable how closely it approximates to a hundred images on RedTube and Yuvutu. In fact a recent video-clip on the latter site even featured a guy wearing an animal mask. Of course, received opinion on the prehistoric image is that it “portrays a totemic spirit or sexual demon associated with initiation ceremonies or fertility rites.” They could be right. There’s no doubt that magic and religion played an important role in primitive society. But I’m sure that didn’t stop the artist getting a powerful erection as he engraved the image. And I can imaging some randy caveman furiously masturbating at the sight of it. And maybe - just maybe - that was the point of it.
