Courting days
[Tuesday, 11th August, 1959] Returned home yesterday afternoon [having spent ten days camping with the Scouts as a scout-leader.] Glad we didn’t return home Sunday as planned, in spite of missing Emma so much. Held a church parade in the Methodist chapel and were made most welcome. After the service, the whole congregation went down to the lakeside to sing hymns, singing each verse in turn with the chapel at Llanuwchlyn at the other end of Llyn Tegid - four miles away! Their voices carried right down the valley. It was a fantastic experience. Perfect end to the so-called holiday. Cooking for twenty over a camp-fire is no joke, but at least I could delegate the pan-scrubbing. I wrote to Emma every day, despite the two mile walk to the nearest post-box. Had two letters back. One of them had two pages of lip-prints, done just as I had requested. God how I missed kissing those lips!
