Old-style parenting

We saw something of Emma’s oldest brother last month. He has recently bought a trailer-tent and was holidaying in Llangollen. We visited him there and, later in the week, he came to see us. [I didn’t give my honest opinion on his impulsive decision to take up camping at the age of seventy-five. The torrential rain may have raised some doubts in his mind.] As usual when they get together, Emma and her brother reminisced about their lives with the harridan who was their mother. Of course I had personal experience of how unreasonable she could be - she did her level best to separate Emma and me. But I am always shocked at how cruel she was when Emma and her brothers were young - and not so young. The woman kept a cane ready to hand, and used it frequently, even when Emma was in her teens. Spare the rod and spoil the child, was her motto. Ironically, it was the fear of a whipping that brought the fourteen-year-old Emma and I together, as I will narrate tomorrow (probably).
