It’s Eisteddfod week. You can tell by the weather! The National Eisteddfod, held in the first week of August alternately in North Wales and South Wales, is one of the oldest cultural festivals in Europe. It is the chief public expression of Welsh culture’s continuing existence, especially in the fields of music and literature. In full rig, it looks for all the world like a military encampment. All its tents and pavilions are erected around a central space known as the Maes (sounds like the English “mice”). Throughout the festival, people are perpetually wandering around this arena - some moving purposefully from one competition or exhibition to another, some hoping to meet friends or to run into Welsh celebrities, some simply wandering aimlessly. Most institutions of Welsh life are represented with displays, from Welsh Water to the Welsh Language Society. There are shops selling everything from Welsh harps to car-stickers. And lots and lots of books - all in the language of heaven. This year, the Eisteddfod is in Bala, North Wales. Emma and I were there on Monday, just to celebrate our Welshness.
