Sulking Saint

This figure, which stands atop my desktop, is a representation of St Isidore of Seville. I’m not sure if it’s a good likeness, and the glasses are certainly poetic licence, perhaps to give him an air of geekiness, or to make him look more intelligent. Born in 560 AD, Isidore is very unlikely to have worn glasses, however much he suffered from eye-strain. The laptop, too, is an anachronism. St Isidore is officially the Patron Saint of computer operators in a general sense, which presumably includes you and me, but hopefully excludes hackers and the wankers who devise malware. It is to St Isidore that we should address our prayers when things go horribly wrong. As we saw on Saturday, St Isidore is no more and no less reliable than any other Patron Saint. [I used to carry a St Christopher medallion, but it didn’t stop me missing buses, running out of petrol, or losing my luggage.] Perhaps St Isidore has taken against me because I failed to observe or even mention his Feast Day, which is on 4th April. I will remedy that next year.
