When Emma and I were at school, sex education was rudimentary to say the least. A film to show the mechanics of sexual reproduction in rabbits, diagrams to show the reproductive system in humans, and an invitation to ask questions which was never taken up. No-one even bothered to ask why the penis was shown in its flaccid state. Ignorance, apparently, was bliss. It may have been an urban myth, but the story went around that a girl had got pregnant because she thought that a sticking-plaster over the navel was an adequate form of contraception. I hope things are a little better now. If young people learn about sex only from sites like RedTube, they will think that girls are normally impregnated orally, or that they somehow absorb sperm through their skin, and that the vagina only served to prepare the male for ejaculation. And how many young men will think they are inadequate because their penis is smaller than a baseball bat?
