Places we like
Oddly enough, we used to visit the ancient market town of Rhuthin (pronounced rith-in) much more often before we came to live in Wales. It was far easier to get there from the Wirral than it is from here in mid Wales. Nowadays we only visit the town occasionally on market days when we are staying for a week at daughter Eva’s, dog- and cat-minding. It is by far the quaintest of the towns in the beautiful Vale of Clwyd, with steep, narrow streets leading up to St Peter’s Square. Rhuthin castle was built by Edward I in 1282 on the site of earlier fortifications, and it became the home of the Grey family. Incidentally, it was an argument with Reginald Grey, Lord of Rhuthin, that sparked off Owain Glyndwr’s revolt in 1400. Glyndwr destroyed the castle, which was later rebuilt, and held by the Lancastrians in the Wars of the Roses.
