Places we like
A unique attraction of Rhuthin is a medieval banquet held in the hotel every weeknight. The hotel itself has delusions of grandeur - as you might expect from what was once a castle. But in the banqueting-room you sit on wooden benches and eat from wooden bowls and platters, as you would have done in the middle ages. The banquet is cooked in sixteenth-century style and served by waitresses in period costume, to the accompaniment of traditional Welsh harp music and singing. Mead is served in pewter goblets. Before the meal a Lord and Lady are appointed for the evening and treated with the respect that their high office deserves. Incidentally, on the three occasions that Emma and I have attended, the Lord and his Lady have been American tourists staying at the hotel. Guests are asked to compose a limerick and a prize is awarded for the best. I won each time, but it was hardly worth the effort. The prize is always a souvenir bookmark.
