The above comment made with reference to “Jones the Computer” yesterday, may need a word of explanation to those not lucky enough to live in the Land of Song. Here in Wales it is common practice to refer to people by their occupation. So among my friends I include John the Painter, Gareth the Milk, Wil Buses, Dai Lec (a retired electrician), Maggie Post (our former post-mistress), Mike the Copper, and Denzil Bins (a refuse disposal operative, a.k.a. bin-man). The story is told that, at the height of the cold war, an MI5 officer came to the village, making discrete enquiries about a suspected soviet “sleeper” - a secret agent, lying low awaiting instructions from Moscow. The bar-man, having listened politely, finally said, “Oh, you mean Jones the Spy. He’ll be in later. I’ll introduce you.” Of course, the story is apocryphal. It appeals to me, however, because I was once investigated as a possible soviet agent. I kid you not.
