A weekend without sex. How does that sound? It was for the usual reason: a couple of days last week taking care of the incredible bouncing dog and its feline partner in crime while daughter Eva and her husband sought wisdom at the feet of their Buddhist teacher. There was an up-side on this occasion, however. Our nearest multiplex is a short bus-ride from Eva’s place and she had booked us tickets for Alice in Wonderland. We enjoyed the film tremendously - the first film we have seen in 3D. I have loved every adaptation of Alice I have ever seen or heard, and this was no exception, although it is strictly speaking not an adaptation of the book. I have always been intrigued by the story’s author, Lewis Caroll - real name Charles Dodgson - and his relationship with the original Alice. It is claimed by several of his biographers that Caroll had said he wanted to marry the 11-year-old Alice Liddell - shades of Humbert Humbert’s Lolita - and that this was the cause of his sudden break with the Liddell family. [To be concluded tomorrow]
