Something beyond my comprehension

I found it depressing and distressing to see a short public-information film on television last night about violence in teenage relationships, which shows a juvenile physically and verbally abusing his girlfriend. There are apparently statistics to show that one in three teenage girls have been abused in this way. Once or twice I have witnessed guys in their late teens or early twenties verbally abusing their partners in public and have found it difficult to hold my tongue. My first thought has always been that of the archetypal old codger: “What is the world coming to?” But on reflection, I know that this is not a new or even an extraordinary phenomenon. After all, one doesn’t suddenly become a wife-beater (and I know at least one of those). But I still find such abuse difficult to comprehend. I would sooner slit my own throat than hurt Emma.
