Eunoterpsia is the assertion that the pursuit of sexual pleasure is the chief goal in life. Personally, I wouldn’t have thought that the question was in any serious doubt. Among the appetites of all living things, the desire for sex predominates. Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it, as the song puts it. Okay, we also need to eat. But only to give ourselves the strength to fornicate (or masturbate if there’s no-one else around). The newly emerged mayfly will live only for hours or minutes, but it’s not food it immediately goes in search of; it’s sex. The purist might argue that it’s reproduction rather than sexual pleasure per se that is the goal, but that’s because they’ve never asked a mayfly, “How was it for you?” You’ll also notice that the definition is conveniently broad. It doesn’t insist, for example, that there has to be another person directly or indirectly involved. I’m a committed eunoterpsian, and I’ve been one since my first wet dream!
