A post by Alex prompted this memory. My friend and colleague Phil and I were enjoying a drink in the lounge-bar of the Halfway House - a watering-hole we frequented every Friday dinner-time as a welcome escape from the chalk-face. Teachers drinking on duty? Well to be fair, we did spend most of those breaks discussing educational matters, and I’m sure we both taught much better on Friday afternoons than we did on Monday mornings. The young lady behind the bar was attractive and friendly, although Phil was more qualified to comment upon her friendliness than I was. One afternoon , Phil nodded in her direction and remarked casually, “It must be cold behind the bar.” It was indeed a pleasant sight. The young ladies nipples were delightfully prominent under her thin woollen sweater, as if she had a couple of hazel-nuts in her bra. Later, I mentioned this to Emma (whose own nipples at the time were exquisite). Ever since, “It’s cold behind the bar” has been our coded message whenever stiff nipples are in evidence.
