Tag der Deutschen Einheit

Today is German Unity Day, a public holiday on which the German people celebrate the official reunion of their country in 1990. [It is not, incidentally, the day that the Berlin Wall came down. For reasons of political sensitivity, 9th November would have been an unfortunate choice.] Emma visited West Germany as a teenager, but I have never visited that splendid country. It is something that Emma and I intend to put right in 2011, when we plan a seven-day river-cruise to celebrate a special anniversary. Apart from a couple of words of greeting, I do not speak German. Neither, incidentally did American President JFK, who famously called himself a hot-dog (or is it a hamburger?) when he announced to the adoring masses “Ich bin ein Berliner.” As a sixth-former, however, I used to do a passable imitation of a German tourist asking for help. I remember it included the words “das Spitzenpoppenbangentüben” to mean “the exhaust-pipe”.
