Yet another programme on the problem of binge-drinking in UK cities prompted this post. A popular eighteenth-century guide to conduct advised women to “suppress all irregular impulses, sinful sexual desires, and immodest use of sensual or carnal pleasures. Chastity is so essential and natural to your sex that every declination from it is a proportional receding from womanhood. An immodest woman is a kind of monster, distorted from its proper form.” Emma’s mother would have agreed whole-heartedly. It was a matter of some pride to her that her husband had never seen her naked, and she commended this modest behaviour to her daughter Emma, as a way to curb my excessive demands. She would have been horrified to learn that Emma had demands of her own, which bordered on the excessive. Thank heaven we have moved on. Mind you, the sight of drunken young women publicly baring their arses outside pubs and clubs on a Saturday night makes me wonder if we haven’t gone a tad too far.
