The nights are drawing in

It was the first of the month yesterday already. That’s my life inexorably slipping by! Mind you, I quite like October. Unless we have an unseasonable spell of warm weather, most of the tourists will have gone for good (until next year) and we can have to town to ourselves again. We can walk into our favourite local and be sure of finding a seat, get a drink without elbowing our way to the bar, and hear ourselves speak. I doubt if our friendly licensee quite shares our enthusiasm for a half-empty pub, but he’s had a very good season this year. My dog-eared, moth-eaten diary reminds me how much I used to love the darker nights October brought. It was already dark when the time came to take Emma home. I was more or less certain to get a quick grope of her tits as we waited for the bus. And another even quicker grope as we kissed goodnight outside her front door. I wonder why we’ve never tried to relive those moments on the way home from the pub? There are a couple of inviting shop doorways en route â chez nous.
