Some things are best forgotten. I have joked that at my age I don’t seem to have a memory so much as a forgetory. People’s names, telephone numbers, birthdays and anniversaries often escape me. I frequently forget where I have put things - which is why I have a pair of reading-glasses in every room in the house. Mercifully, my forgetory is sometimes as selective as my memory can be. There have been periods of disappointment and unhappiness in my life which are almost completely forgotten, and when I read about them in my diaries, it seems as if they must have happened to somebody else. It strikes me that, for all those electronic games and gizmos for improving ones memory, there ought to be games for improving ones forgetory. There are scenes in everybody’s life that would be better left on the cutting-room floor. Sadly, instead of sweeping them up and binning them, some people feel compelled to splice them together and re-run them over and over, without realising how much better the film is without them.
