Our television gave up the ghost last week after only eight years. The picture developed a fault which, in the context of lenses, I could describe as pin-cushion distortion. If Emma had appeared on the screen, she would have appeared as in the picture on the left. Since it was a CRT set, the size and weight of a family car, we decided against having it repaired and have replaced it with an LCD model. Having checked what was available in our local shop, we look up the same model on the internet and found it £150 cheaper. Then Emma spent half an hour on the phone haggling with the local dealer. Her persistence paid off, and they mutually agreed on a price only marginally higher than the best price on the internet. We like to support local tradesmen, but not at any price. I always leave these negotiations to Emma, because she drives a much harder bargain than I ever could.
