Places we like
We visit Barmouth two or three times a month, often just for a pleasant day out. Its location on the west coast of North Wales, lying between a mountain range and the sea, at the mouth of the river Mawddach, makes it one of the most beautiful in Wales. There is a quaint but busy harbour and an abundance of small shops, pubs and cafes. A spectacular wooden railway- and foot-bridge spans the river - the only crossing if you’ve completed the twelve-mile walk along the Mawddach. The beach is large and perfect for sunbathing, and surfers can often be seen, depending on the swells and time of year. The beauty of the estuary is breathtaking, and the road between Barmouth and Dolgellau was described by the art critic John Ruskin as the most beautiful journey in the UK. Barmouth’s only drawback is that in the Summer season, you will hear more Birmingham accents than Welsh!
