Hugging rhymes with mugging

Okay, I know that today is National Hugging Day - there is a dedicated website promoting it. Frankly, it sounds to me like a pickpockets’ charter. Thankfully, and somewhat surprisingly, there are no Hugging Day cards to send - yet. Naturally, Emma and I will be hugging as a matter of course, needing no excuse. I regret to say, however, that my natural reserve will prevent me from wearing a hug-me t-shirt and from hugging people at random. Even close friends and family will be spared the embarrassment of an unsolicited hug. And strangers will be spared the inconvenience of reporting me to the police for assault, indecent or otherwise. I am aware of the benefits to both hugger and huggee of the friendly embrace, and I have written about this at length (this time last year). But somehow I doubt if the idea of a National Hugging Day will catch on here in the UK - except on the sports-field obviously, where over-jubilant goal-scorers are subjected to shows of spontaneous affection stopping just short of anal intercourse.
