Today is Australia’s national day. What better day to remember the hardship and heartache suffered by so many Australians in the flooding which occurred in Queensland this month - flooding which has rightly been described as being on a biblical scale. Where is Moses when you need him? It seems to be a rule that the bigger the country, the more devastating and large-scale the calamities it can suffer - and the more philosophical the inhabitants are in accepting that such things happen. When we hear about “devastating floods” here in the UK, it’s usually part of a single county and maybe a couple of towns which are affected. And boy, don‘t we go on about it! We find it hard to imagine an area as big as France and Germany combined under water - not to mention the added danger of venomous snakes and crocodiles! [I hear that an ex-pat friend of ours was bitten by a poisonous spider, driven indoors by the rising water. She’s the only individual affected that I know personally.]
