It's the first of the month again

Lucky me, every day, I wake up to Emma; Emma invariably wakes up to an empty bed. But as usual on the first day of the month, I placed the rabbit strategically beside her when I crept out of bed this morning. It reminds her to say “Rabbits” as soon as she opens her eyes. And the rabbit has more than usual significance this month. It’s the Chinese New Year on Thursday, and it’s the Year of the Rabbit. According to Chinese astrologers, this should be a placid year, very much welcomed and needed after the ferocious year of the Tiger - they certainly got that bit right! It’s suggested that we go off to some quiet spot to lick our wounds and get some rest after all the battles of the previous year. Good taste and refinement will shine on everything, and people will acknowledge that persuasion is better than force. In international relations and politics it’s a time for quiet diplomacy. On the personal front, it’s a time to watch out that we don’t become too self-indulgent. The influence of the Rabbit tends to spoil those who like too much comfort and thus impair their effectiveness and sense of duty. You have been warned.
