A double celebration

Its Saint Dwynwens Day and Burns Night. Dwynwen is the patron saint of Welsh lovers. In love with Prince Maelon, she was promised by her father to another prince. In his anger and frustration, Maelon raped Dwynwen and left her. She retreated to a lonely wood and prayed that she might be released from her love for Maelon. Her guardian angel gave her a potion which assuaged her passion; but in a dream she saw that the same potion, given to Maelon, turned him into a block of ice. Granted three wishes, Dwynwen asked that Maelon be restored to life, that she herself should never marry, and that God should answer all requests made by her on behalf of true lovers. All three wishes were granted. The Scottish poet Robert Burns - he never called himself Rabbie, by the way - needs no introduction from me. If youre a devotee, enjoy your haggis - great chieftain o' the puddin-race!
