Alfie is a pen-name, a pseudonym, an alias. I adopted it for the Blog for the obvious reason - the fear of being outed. The fear, in fact, was almost entirely Emma’s. Personally, I don’t give a tinker’s cuss who knows what I get up to in my spare time but, as Emma points out, it’s mostly her nudity that appears on the Blog. I had a good reason, however, for adopting the name. Throughout my twenties, I was known as Alfie and answered to that name. I worked as a clerk in a warehouse, where I had to sign my name a hundred times a day on outgoing consignment-notes. I actually signed with my initial and surname, but with a little imagination, my signature was interpreted as Alfie. When a book with that title was published, followed by a film starring Michael Caine in the title role, I was happy to cash in on the kudos. I became - and to some people I remain - Alfie.
