This is how Emma keeps some of her ear-rings in order. The picture, created by Emma, is also a pretty accurate representation of the row of small cottages where we live. Ours is the one in the middle. Each cottage opens directly onto the street both front and back, and each was originally two tiny, back-to-back cottages. This has led to a slight difficulty with our postal address, because the front and back of the houses are in different streets - neither of which occurs in our address. Our “street name” refers only to the row of cottages. Across the end of the terrace there is a row of small out-buildings which were once the toilets - one to each household, which would have been something of a luxury in those days. Later, each cottage - strictly speaking each pair of cottages - was modernised according to the whim the owner, or the size of his purse. No two interiors are alike. I often wonder what domestic life was like when the cottages were first built: a single room on the ground floor, serving as kitchen and living-room, and a single bedroom on the second floor, from which a ladder gave access to the loft for
the children.
