So what about Emma Jane - the object of Alfie’s love/desire/lust? Emma hates both of her real forenames, to such a degree that she thought of changing them by deed-poll when we married and she took my surname. The alias Jane actually sounds quite like her real second name, although it could not easily be guessed, even given that information. The pseudonym Emma came about when recalling those early days of our marriage. Her real first name begins with the letter M and Emma wanted to choose a new name for herself beginning with the same letter, but could not decide what name to use. In the meantime, I called her Emm or sometimes “Emm for short, but not for long.” I even sent Emma a cheeky hand-drawn Valentine’s Day card based on that theme (which was quickly destroyed lest her mother should chance upon it). I have pasted up a new version of the card here. And I still can’t see the letter M in upper case without it conjuring up the image. From Emm, came Emma.
