I am a great believer in archetypes - those unconscious primordial images passed down from our ancestral past. I don’t intend delving into Plato’s Theory of Forms, or Jung’s Archetypes of the Collective Unconsciousness. Be glad! Be very glad! But I believe we are all born with a concept of The Female (for example) hard-wired into our psyche. It is not a construct created from our experience of women in the real world, but an inherited concept which helps us make sense of our male/female duality. The goddesses of prehistory and the women we meet in myth and legend represent our attempts to give substance to this idea. The innate idea of The Female and our experience of real women mutually react to create a fantasy female, onto which we may project our actual mothers, lovers, wives, et cetera. [At this point, it is traditional for Freudians to cry Bullshit!] This is the Venus of Willendorf by the way. And she's 25,000 years old.
