Our dear friend Lowri has invited herself to stay for a few days next week, as she has done every year since we retired here. She is a city girl at heart but likes to escape to the country now and then. [I am a country boy at heart, but have no reciprocal urge to escape to the city, so we politely turn down her offer to accommodate us in return.] Like me, Lowri worked in special-needs education. Although we worked in different establishments, we often met professionally and she and Emma became good friends. Lowri is now head-teacher (principle) of a school for children with severe learning difficulties, and as a leading light in our professional organisation, she is in regular contact with my former colleagues. It will be good to hear all the latest gossip, although I hope for once we can avoid the following exchange: “Do you remember so-and-so? we’ll, he/she died last term.” It always reminds me that one day she will be saying: “Do you remember Alfie?”
