When I retired from teaching I wrote a short personal letter to everyone in the school with whom I had come into contact - caretakers, dinner-ladies, cleaners and over eighty teaching-staff. As special-needs co-ordinator, I had had dealings with all of them. I thanked them each and every one for their friendship - and occasionally for their forbearance. I reminded them of just one encounter - sometimes one of many - by which they had made my life a happier one. I didn’t realise what an effect these brief letters would have on the recipients. It taught me the lesson of how important it is remember the small acts of kindness we all receive from family, friends and colleagues; but equally how important it is to express our appreciation. So to everyone whose Blogs I read, thank you for sharing your varied and fascinating lives with us. And to those of you who occasionally leave kind comments, thank you for helping to keep the Black Dog from the door.
