Today is Dydd Santes Dwynwen - Saint Dwynwen’s Day - celebrated by Welsh lovers everywhere. The most beautiful of Brychan Brycheiniog‘s many daughters, Dwynwen fell in love with a man named Maelon. The love-stricken youth wanted them to sleep together but Dwynwen wanted to remain a virgin until after marriage. She told Maelon this, but he was overcome with desire and raped her. Dwynwen fled to the woods, distraught. There an angel gave her a magic potion to cool both her love for Maelon and Maelon’s love for her. In fact, in Maelon’s case, the potion cooled his ardour too much, and he was turned into a block of ice. However, the angel had also granted Dwynwen three wishes. Dwynwen wished that she would never marry, and that she would become the patron saint of lovers, to console them through sadness and love. She used the last wish - although some sources say this was her first wish - to get Maelon unfrozen. And here is Emma as Dwynwen.
