It’s always sad to see yet another marriage end up on the rocks - especially if that marriage is your daughter’s. Eva and her husband have separated, and their divorce is now inevitable. Emma and I got on quite well with our son-in-law, but we don’t have to live with him, do we? I found it quite amusing that he didn’t know which end of a screwdriver to hold; that his was the kiss of death to anything mechanical, electrical or electronic; that his idea of gardening was to move plant pots around on the patio and leave the rest to nature. I can, however, see that these eccentricities might prove annoying after a while. Less endearing was his contention that things like cleaning the car, or driving Eva to the shops, was beneath his dignity. Eva worked long hours in a demanding job, but returned home in the evening to face all the domestic chores and household maintenance, and to wait upon her husband, who had arrived home two hours earlier. When he said, last month, “You don’t buy a dog and bark yourself,” it was Goodbye, Adam.
