Bye-bye bow-wow

Eva’s separation from her husband means that we will no longer need periodically to go to Garden City to look after the incredible bouncing dog. To me, that’s an undisguised blessing. The critter always contrived to interfere with our sex-life, by sleeping on our bed and joining in the fun if we started anything. But to Emma it’s like a bereavement, and I’ve caught her looking at the doggie-toys in the supermarket the way a broody mother-to-be looks at pink booties in Mothercare. Not that Emma wants a dog of her own, you understand. She appreciates the many ties and expenses which pet-ownership involves. But she has become emotionally attached. I presume it’s like being a grandmother. She can enjoy having the little darlings around and showering love and affection upon them, but be glad to send them back to their parents. Of course, Emma still has her tiger (surprisingly cheap to feed). But it’s not the same.
