Winning is for losers

The dominoes season is half-way through and already other teams are crowing about their position in the league. Pardon me? I think you must have mistaken me for someone who gives a damn. Emma and I play because we enjoy spending an evening with friends, the games being a mere diversion during the conversation. By the time we go to bed, we will have committed the gossip to memory and forgotten which team actually won (although more often than not the records will show that Emma and Alfie won their games ). We never cease to be amazed at how important it is for some people to win, and how devastated they are when they lose. How can a game take on such significance? I remember Bill Shankley, manager of a very successful Liverpool football team, saying, “People say football isn’t a matter of life or death. It isn’t. It’s more important than that!” He might - just might - have been talking tongue-in-cheek. But to thousands of Liverpool supporters, or Arsenal supporters (or Miami Dolphins supporters if it comes to that) he wasn’t. To them, winning was, and is, everything. Talk about the need to get a life.
