We don't choose our parents

Looking back
Parents cannot always be relied upon to do what is best for their children. I have mentioned before that Emma’s mother did all in her power to separate Emma and me. I suppose it could be said that she was only doing what she thought was best for her daughter. However …When I first met Emma she was studying dressmaking and design at a technical college. Two years into her course, she was short-listed in a national competition to find the country’s most promising students. Her dress designs and technical skills had been highly commended, and her teachers believed she had an excellent chance of winning. The prize was to be an apprenticeship with a prestigious fashion-house. Emma had already designed and made her outfit, and was to model it in front of the judges on the catwalk. Unfortunately, the date coincided with her mother’s plans to visit relatives in Cornwall, and she insisted that Emma withdraw from the competition. Emma was broken-hearted - I remember it well. But at least she knew from that moment that her mother did not always have her best interests at heart.
