Why Boxing Day?

Traditionally, the landed gentry stuffed themselves so much on Christmas Day that they couldnt even look at food for a day or so afterwards. So they magnanimously gave their servants a day off to visit their families, and even presented them with a box of left-over goodies from the table, which would otherwise have gone to waste. Hence, Boxing Day. This was also the day when local traders would call cap in hand, in the hope of finding their well-heeled customers still jovial enough to pay their bills - perhaps with a little extra as a token of appreciation for services rendered. Hopefully, I will be giving Emma a little extra as a token of appreciation for services rendered. But what else did we get for Christmas? It was a Kindle for me, and something electronic and cosmetic for Emma, with which she intends to defeat the ravages of time.
