American Independence Day

As a true Brit (if only for the sake of argument) I’m not sure I should be celebrating the loss a former colony. But as a true Welshman, I envy the rebels their success in breaking free from England. So have a nice day, you guys. And remember what you owe to this dear little land of ours: at least eight of your Presidents had Welsh ancestry - Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, James Garfield, and others. It was Jefferson who composed the Declaration of Independence; Robert Morris was the foremost financier of the American revolution and wrote the final draft of your Constitution; John Marshall was the father of American constitutional law. All were of Welsh descent, and I could go on. The chances are that even the name America is derived from the Welsh ap Meurig (=son of Maurice). The Welsh merchant Richard Ameryk (derived from ap Meurig) was the chief investor in John Cabot’s transatlantic crossing of 1497. Derivation from Amerigo Vespucci is more doubtful, on the grounds that countries are never named after a pioneer’s forename. Iechyd da! Cheers!
