Places we like - 15

Emma and I fell in love with Betws y Coed the first time we visited it, in our courting days. And you know how long ago that was! Unless you have been there, you could not believe how beautiful the Betws y Coed area is. Granite-built, the ancient little town stands at the confluence of two swift-flowing rivers. The name derives from Betws, which is Welsh distortion of the English Bead-House - a place where you count your rosary-beads (in other words a church) - and y Coed, which means in the woods. The town, popular but largely unspoiled, is worth visiting for its own sake, but it is also an excellent centre for walking and touring, and the familiar haunt of artists and anglers. Within walking distance of the town are the Fairy Glen and the Swallow Falls - their very names suggesting how beautiful these popular tourist attractions are. Emma and I could willingly have lived here, but neither of us felt we could afforded to lose the arm and a leg which a property would have cost us.
