Today is German Unity Day, which commemorates the formal reunification of Germany on 3rd October, 1990 - eleven months after the fall of the Berlin wall. Declared a national holiday, the occasion is celebrated each year throughout Germany, but more formally with a ceremonial act and a citizens’ festival (Burgerfest) which is held in a different city each year. The first such celebration took place in Berlin in 1990. This year the festival is being held in the beautiful city of Bremen, a picture of which illustrates this post, with Emma added to lend a little human interest. In addition to the formal ceremony, various celebrations are held in the federal capital Berlin, centred mainly around the Brandenburg Gate - one of Europe’s most famous landmarks. Not altogether coincidentally, the day also marks the end of the Octoberfest - a two-week beer festival held in Munich and attended by more than six million people each year. posted by sooyup on Daily trivia
