… November is National American Indian Heritage Month. Its purpose is to recognize and honour the original peoples of America. A time, too, to remember the injustices that have been suffered by American Indian people. Throughout the history of the USA, American Indian and Alaska Native peoples have been an integral part of the American character. Against all the odds, America's first peoples have endured, and remain a vital cultural and moral presence, occasionally pricking the conscience of the nation. American Indians possess values and ideas that deserve to be ingrained in the American spirit: the knowledge that humans can thrive and prosper without destroying the natural environment; the understanding that people from very different backgrounds, cultures, religions, and traditions can work together to build a great country; and the awareness that diversity can be a source of strength rather than division.
