When I saw Emma naked for the first time - as recorded in an extract from my diary posted here - it totally took my breath away, leaving me feeling faint. I remember the image as though it were yesterday, and when I see her naked today, I see her through the filter of that memorable first time. When visiting the museums of Florence in 1817, the French novelist Stendhal, was overwhelmed by the beauty of the works of art on display. The symptoms he described are now known as Stendhal's syndrome, or Florence syndrome - a psychosomatic illness that causes rapid heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, and confusion, when an individual is exposed to art of overwhelming beauty. The term can also be used to describe a similar reaction when confronted with immense beauty in the natural world. So that‘s what it was! While there is debate in the medical community about whether the condition really exists, some sufferers have actually required treatment in hospital. I’m glad I didn’t. It would have taken some explaining to Emma’s mother.
