[Monday, 4th October, 1960] Busy weekend. Without me actually proposing, Emma and I have been saying for months how great it will be when we are married - sex whenever we want it, wherever we want it. On Saturday, I asked her if we could get engaged, so there could be no doubt of our intention to marry as soon as she is twenty-one. On Sunday, she spoke to her father on the phone to Cork - his ship docks there every weekend. He told her to go ahead, as he likes me. What a fine judge of character! I phoned Emma’s mother from work this morning and asked if I could call to see her at lunch-time. Of course she wanted to know why, and I told her I that Emma and I wanted to get engaged, preferably with her permission. She said there was no point in asking, because she would never agree to the engagement. She added that she had not had Emma to get married, but to take care of her in her old age. I did not call her a selfish bitch, but I did tell her politely that we would get engaged anyway, with or without her blessing.
